The Effect of Pregnancy on Neuromyelitis Optica
Neuromyelitis optica commonly affects females of childbearing age. To date, women’s health issues in NMO have not been studied in detail. This project aims to determine the effect of pregnancy on relapse rate and long-term disability in NMO. In addition, we will explore the incidence of pregnancy related complications and infertility, which will prove informative to the biology of the disease. The results from this study can potentially guide how we counsel NMO patients regarding family planning. Treating physicians will be more equipped to determine timing of more aggressive disease modifying treatment in relation to pregnancy.
